The Twin Pines Food Co-op is a nonprofit organization, where members purchase shares, volunteer time, serve on committees, and vote on the policies of the co-op. Membership is open to all and very reasonable. Benefits include discounts on food, clothing, and other items, and the opportunity to meet and be involved with some great people. Twin Pines Co-op is one of the organizations funded by the Port Washington Community Chest (see recent post). The Co-op sign pictured here is very familiar to the residents of Port Washington (the image of two pine trees is a universal symbol of cooperation).
I stopped in at the shop recently and had a lovely time speaking with Edna Turner (left, Co-op Director) and Ann Dellavecchiaa (right, Co-op Board President), where they graciously showed me around and invited me to sit while they told me about their work. Edna, wearing the customary flower in her hair, is a charming person and a Port icon. Ann, obviously a caring person, was interested in me and my family, and we commiserated with each other on the state of the economy and its effect on the people of Port. I was struck with their obvious passion and devotion to the community while they spoke. Coincidentally, during our conversation, I found out that Edna is originally from Queens Village where my husband Kenn is from, and they attended the same church - Incarnation; small world.
The Co-op is involved in many programs including programs for the handicapped, seniors, and teens, consumer education, food distribution, various workshops, and more. At the store, they carry new and gently used clothing, furniture, household items, toys, jewelry, arts and crafts, and books. They welcome donations of these items and food (call first and check that expiration date!) Because we spent so much time talking, I didn't get a chance to shop, so I intend to go back soon.
No doubt you've passed the sign dozens of times, so why not stop by? Now is the perfect time to visit the co-op, even if you don't become a member. With the holidays coming, you can pick up an inexpensive gift, save on gas, and support the community, all at the same time!
